Thus began Maduro’s third challenging term, having managed to survive the previous two. As the chosen successor of his predecessor, Hugo Chávez, Maduro has been in power for 12 years and is expected to remain for another six. He is supposed to by law, but whether he actually will is uncertain given the opposition from a segment of the Venezuelan population and the history of violent coups in Latin America.
